Build your Support System
The Key to Thriving as an Entrepreneur and Parent
As an entrepreneur and single mother, there were times when I felt like I was carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. Juggling business demands while raising three children was no easy feat, but it was during these challenging moments that I learned the true value of a strong support system.
When I started my entrepreneurial journey, I was a single mother with three kids, including a son with special needs. The challenge was real. Every day was a balance between business meetings, school runs, therapy appointments, and making sure the kids had what they needed emotionally and physically. It was overwhelming, but I wasn’t alone—at least, not entirely.
The Power of a Strong Support Network
Looking back, I realise that my success—both as a mother and as an entrepreneur—was largely due to the support I had around me. From family members who stepped in to help with the kids, to business mentors who guided me through rough patches, I found that a solid network can make the difference between thriving and burning out.
After meeting my wonderful husband, who has become a loving stepdad to my children, I experienced firsthand how expanding your personal support system can transform your life. With his help and the emotional support he provided, I was able to focus more on my businesses while also ensuring my kids felt secure and loved.
How to Build Your Own Support System
Whether you’re a single parent, an entrepreneur, or both, building a strong support system is essential. Here are a few strategies that worked for me and might help you, too:
1. Ask for Help, and Don’t Feel Guilty About It
One of the biggest hurdles for many of us is feeling like asking for help is a sign of weakness. It’s not. In fact, allowing others to support you not only helps you get through the day, but it also strengthens your relationships. Reach out to family, friends, or trusted colleagues when you need it.
2. Find Your Tribe
Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who understand the challenges you face. Whether it’s other entrepreneurs, parents, or business groups, having people around who "get it" can provide both practical advice and emotional support.
3. Invest in Your Relationships
Building a support system is not just about taking, it’s about giving. Invest time in the relationships that matter, be there for your loved ones, and build connections that are genuine. These relationships will be the ones that help lift you up when times are tough.
4. Consider Professional Support
Don't be afraid to lean on professional help, whether it’s hiring a business coach, enlisting a babysitter for a few hours a week, or seeking out childcare solutions. Sometimes, outsourcing a few tasks can give you the breathing room you need to thrive.
5. Partner Up
If you're lucky enough to find a life partner or even a business partner who shares your vision, hold on to that relationship. My husband has been a rock for both me and my kids, and together, we’ve been able to build a home that supports both our business and family goals.
Thriving as a Parent and Entrepreneur
At the end of the day, being an entrepreneur and a parent isn't about doing it all alone. It’s about finding the balance that works for you, and knowing when to lean on others. With a strong support system, not only can you thrive in your business, but you can also create a loving, stable environment for your family.
Building that network might take time, but the rewards are worth it. Whether it’s through your partner, your family, friends, or professional connections, the right support can make all the difference in both your personal and professional success.
